When Should You Apply for a New Credit Card?
Some may tell you to always be working on a minimum spend. Once it’s complete, apply to the next card and repeat all year long. While this will bring in ALL the points, it’s not generally how I role.
These are times when I consider opening a new card:
During Elevated Welcome Offers – Like the current Capital One Venture offer, the best time to apply is when a card has a temporarily increased sign-up bonus. These extra miles can make a huge difference in booking flights and hotels.
Before a Big Purchase – Since you need to meet a spending requirement to earn the welcome bonus, if I have a large purchas, such as home renovations, business expenses, or annual insurance payments- you better believe I’m considering opening a credit card.
When Planning a Major Trip – If I have upcoming travel in the next 6-12 months, applying now allows time to earn and redeem the bonus for flights, hotels, or other travel expenses.
Final Thoughts
The current 75,000-mile offer + $250 credit on the Capital One Venture Rewards card is one of the best I’ve seen, making now a great time to apply if you’ve been considering it.
