Whose king? Cash or Card?

With Apple Pay linked, I rarely think about cash when I travel. But 2 weeks ago I was in a tizzy because I could NOT purchase a damn thing. Spot #1 is absolutely a CASH is KING destination.

TOP STORY: For Reals → Take a 👀

This morning, after school drop off I had 3 things on my to do list:

  1. Sign the document to solidify my latest consulting contract.

  2. Pack the kids for our upcoming long weekend away.

  3. Write this newsletter for you.

Turns out, the first thing I did was BOOK 4 tickets to GREECE.

It wasn’t on my to do list…got a little side tracked…

It wasn’t even on my radar because that trip isn’t for another 7 months but…

Why not?

It’s a ‘kill 2 birds with 1 stone’ kinda thing because now I’m going to tell you how I did it 👏

Here’s my attempt at making it as concise and simple as possible:

✈️ Step 1: First stop—AegeanAir.com. They were running a kids fly free promo, so I had high hopes. But…no availability. And the flights were $700 one way. Nope. Darn.

🔍 Step 2: Time to search smarter. I hopped onto my favorite (and free!) award search engine, PointsYeah, and expanded my search to a 3-day range. This let me see which dates had the best deal. It’s SUCH an IMPORTANT part of searching. Literally one day after the flight I found the flights were triple in points!

💡 Step 3: Jackpot! Found flights for 20K points on Air France. To double-check, I went over to KLM’s website (same website as AirFrance), and yep—they were there!

🎉 Step 4: Signed into my Flying Blue account and saw I had 80K points just sitting there, waiting to make my life easier.

(they were there because I had cancelled a flight with them a few months ago and those points were refunded into the account)

  • Had I not had points already in my loyalty account I would have chosen points from either Chase or Capital One, and simply transferred that amount from my bank directly to KLM/AirFrance.

Bonus: Air France automatically discounts kids 25% on reward tickets, so I got an even sweeter deal.

🤔 And what if a better deal pops up? No stress! These tickets are fully refundable. If a transfer bonus rolls around, I might tweak the flights later. But for now? That’s one less thing on my to-do list. Greece, here we come! 🇬🇷✨

How could you do this? Well, it’s just one welcome offer from ANY major bank because KLM.com accepts points from ALL major bank cards- these ones being my favorite 😉 → Capital One, these guys and of course, my Chase friends!

Quick Hits:

✈︎ Our Family Travels

This weekend we went to northern Spain for a little getaway with some friends to explore wine country. Wow was it special!

A quick tip → We utilized (part of) our annual $300 travel credit from my favorite Capital One Venture X card. I booked the rental car in my Cap One Travel Portal and the credit was automatically applied 🎉

I use this card on every single trip. In addition to the free rental car, we also used this card to get us into the Priority Pass lounge at the Malaga Airport last week ⬇️

Love me some lounge time 🙂
